What to put on a book map
Branch by the book’s argument, not its chapters. One branch for the central claim, one for the evidence the author leans on, one for what you disagree with, and one for what you will do differently. That last branch is what separates a summary from a note-to-self.
Keep page numbers on the evidence lines only. They are the ones you will want to find again, and citing a specific page in a conversation does more work than quoting the whole book.
Where book maps go wrong
Summarising everything. A map that covers all twelve chapters is a table of contents with extra steps; a map that covers the three ideas that changed your mind is a document you will re-read. The other failure is leaving out disagreement — a summary with no friction in it is usually a summary you have not thought about.
Editing on the canvas
Every node is editable: double-click to rename, Tab and Enter to build structure, drag branches to reorder, and one click applies a theme. Changes autosave to your browser. If you want the full walkthrough first, read how to make a mind map, or open the mind map maker and start from a blank canvas.
Exporting and sharing
Export as PNG, PDF or SVG — watermark-free, no account. Exporting as JSON instead keeps the full structure, so you can re-import and carry on later.

FAQ
How do I summarize a book with a mind map?
Put the book title in the center. Branch into the main themes or chapters, then under each write core ideas, key quotes, and finally a takeaways branch with one action per idea you want to keep.
Why summarize books as mind maps?
A summary map is searchable and reusable: you can scan a book's structure in 30 seconds months later, and compare maps of related books side by side. Linear notes rarely get re-read; maps do.
Can I export the book map to keep as a library?
Yes — export as SVG for crisp resolution, PNG for sharing, or PDF for a reading journal. Each book gets one file you can revisit.
